How NDDC Boss Allegedly Squandered ₦100 Billion from Niger Delta Funds – Groups Call EFCC, ICPC to Investigate
By Reporter, Abuja
Drama continues to unfold as allegations of massive financial mismanagement rock the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). Concerned groups and residents of the Niger Delta have accused the Commission’s Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, of squandering over ₦100 billion meant for developmental projects in the oil-rich region.
The groups, speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to launch a thorough investigation into what they described as “a monumental abuse of office and betrayal of the Niger Delta people.”
Spokesperson Williams Oboro Osaro lamented that while ordinary Niger Delta residents are grappling with poverty, inflation, and neglect, their leaders are indulging in reckless celebrations and wasteful expenditures. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his anti-corruption efforts and urged security agencies to clamp down on perpetrators of financial crimes.
At the center of the allegations is the NDDC’s 25th anniversary celebration, which reportedly cost more than ₦100 billion. Critics say the events included award ceremonies, cultural shows, extensive media campaigns, luxury souvenirs, and heavy allowances for dignitaries, all at the expense of abandoned roads, schools, and hospitals in the region.
Beyond the anniversary, the NDDC is also accused of organizing bloated seminars and retreats that consumed billions. A capacity-building seminar in Lagos allegedly gulped ₦11 billion, while another in Uyo cost ₦8 billion. Analysts argue that these funds could have been channeled into critical infrastructure such as rural roads and power projects.
Further fueling public outrage were reports of Dr. Ogbuku’s flamboyant birthday celebrations across Port Harcourt, Lagos, Abuja, and even abroad — with business-class flights, presidential suites, and millions in estacodes allegedly funded through official channels.
“This is a disgraceful insult to the people of the Niger Delta,” said Chief Pere Ebikeme, a traditional leader in Delta State. “Our people lack basic amenities while billions are being squandered on parties and propaganda.”
Observers say the alleged financial recklessness undermines President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes fiscal discipline and good governance. Youth groups and community leaders have warned that unless the NDDC is urgently investigated and reformed, the agency risks losing its credibility entirely.
“This NDDC MD is making a mockery of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope,” said Comrade Iniobong Udoh, a youth leader in Akwa Ibom. “You cannot preach sacrifice to Nigerians while allowing public officials to spend billions on vanity.”
The groups urged the EFCC and ICPC to act swiftly in order to restore accountability and salvage the image of the NDDC.
