PLASIEC Fixes Sep 1, 2026 Date for LG Elections, Lawandi Datti Hails Gov. Mutfwang’s Commitment to Democracy

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has fixed September 1, 2026, as the date for the next local government elections in the state. Commissioner for Water Resources and Energy, Hon. Lawandi Datti, described the announcement as historic, commending Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for safeguarding democracy through a transparent and lawful electoral process—unlike past administrations that often relied on caretaker committees rather than proper elections.
Datti hailed the development as a milestone, noting that PLASIEC has now set a precedent by preparing to conduct consecutive local government elections without disrupting the democratic process. According to him, this reflects Governor Mutfwang’s steadfast commitment to fairness, respect for the rule of law, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
He stressed that the governor’s decision to allow PLASIEC to function independently, without undue interference, demonstrates true democratic leadership and a clear departure from the era of caretaker committees that denied citizens the right to elect their own local representatives.

“For far too long, many administrations across the country have undermined democracy at the grassroots level,” he observed. “Instead of conducting elections, they imposed caretaker committees on local governments, thereby stripping the people of their right to freely choose their leaders and creating room for manipulation that excluded opposition voices.”

Governor Mutfwang, however, has charted a different path. Under his administration in 2024, PLASIEC successfully conducted free and fair local government elections. Now, in another historic stride, the Commission has once again set a date for the 2026 polls—without interference from the governor.

The Commissioner describe this development as remarkable, noting that it shows Governor Mutfwang is a man of his word, a true democrat, and a leader who respects institutional independence. By allowing PLASIEC to operate freely, he has set a democratic standard that other leaders are encouraged to emulate.

This step, they stressed, is not just about politics but about trust, fairness, and the future of democracy. The governor has demonstrated that leadership is not about clinging to power but about empowering citizens to decide their future.

Indeed, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang is writing his name in gold as one of the few Nigerian leaders who stand firmly for justice, fairness, and democratic values. Plateau State, many believe, is blessed to have him at the helm of affairs.

It is hoped that his example will inspire other leaders across Nigeria to do the same—because democracy belongs to the people, not to politicians.

Some residents have also expressed confidence that even opposition parties will acknowledge the governor’s commitment to fairness, as his leadership continues to provide opportunities for all. The Commissioner welcome the upcoming election as another chance to prove the ruling party’s strength at the grassroots, describing it as a “semi-final” ahead of the 2027 general elections.
