Rebuilding Bassa: The Developmental Strides Under Governor Mutfwang and Dr. Joshua Riti

Bassa Local Government Area, one of Plateau State’s most diverse and agriculturally endowed regions, is today experiencing a quiet but profound transformation. Long associated with insecurity and neglect, the LGA is now emerging as a story of resilience and renewal, driven by the vision of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and the committed leadership of its Executive Chairman, Hon. Dr. Joshua Sunday Riti.
At the center of this transformation is Dr. Riti’s “Rebuild Bassa Now” project, a homegrown initiative that has quickly become a symbol of hope and collective progress. Anchored on the governor’s reformist agenda, it has provided Bassa with a clear direction — rebuilding infrastructure, restoring peace, and reviving the local economy.
One of the most visible achievements is the modern administrative complex, now nearing completion. Expected to be commissioned during the administration’s first anniversary, the project is set to improve efficiency in governance and give Bassa a befitting seat of local administration.
In Tengara, a bridge with three box culverts is being constructed to connect communities, despite flooding challenges that initially threatened progress. Meanwhile, the 13.5-kilometer Gazizi–Gemu road in Pengana is opening up previously isolated settlements, giving farmers and traders easier access to larger markets.

Markets are also receiving attention. Along Jingui Road, the Sion Market project is being developed with new offices and facilities, designed to strengthen local commerce and boost revenue generation.

Housing is another area of focus. Through partnership with the state government, Bassa is hosting ambitious projects — a 400-unit estate in Zanwra and a 2,000-unit housing scheme in Miango — both aimed at providing decent homes for civil servants, displaced families, and residents seeking stability.

For years, Bassa bore the brunt of insecurity, with repeated attacks in communities such as Zikwe, Zike, and Nkie Miango. But the combined efforts of Governor Mutfwang and Dr. Riti are gradually restoring confidence. New measures, including restrictions on night grazing, regulated motorcycle movement, and improved security–community engagement, are helping to foster peace and rebuild trust among residents.

As one of Plateau’s major farming belts, Bassa is benefitting directly from the state’s agricultural revival. Mechanized farming support, tractor distribution, and market linkages are empowering farmers to recover from displacement, increase productivity, and contribute to Plateau’s broader food security agenda.

Education and healthcare are also receiving attention. Public schools in Bassa are being rehabilitated under the state’s education revival program, with new classrooms and learning facilities. Healthcare delivery is improving through the reforms of the Plateau State Hospitals Management Board, ensuring wider access to affordable services. Water supply projects are also extending to rural communities, addressing shortages that have persisted for years.

According to Dr. Riti, 14 projects are currently ongoing across the LGA, ranging from infrastructure to social welfare, and all are expected to be commissioned during the administration’s one-year anniversary.

Taken together, these efforts represent more than isolated projects. They are part of a deliberate attempt to reposition Bassa as a land of peace, productivity, and promise. With Governor Mutfwang providing vision at the state level and Dr. Riti translating it into action at the grassroots, the synergy is delivering results that residents are beginning to feel in their daily lives.

For a local government once known more for its challenges than its achievements, the progress unfolding in Bassa is both significant and symbolic: a testament to what focused leadership and community-driven governance can achieve.
