Human Rights Activist Promoting The Rights Of Women and Girls On The Plateau

The Members of the National Human Rights Commission and it Partners gathered in Secretariat Junction in Jos on Monday, walking to Secretariat Roundabout, holding banners reading "Respect Human Rights and Stop Rape".

The event rally other Women's Rights and Human Rights NGOs on kick-starting the 16 days of activism, promoting issues that would stop sexual and gender based violence in Plateau State, the theme was to end violence against women and girls, stop gender based violence.


The Plateau State Co-ordinator National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Mrs. Veronica Abe, appreciating all (NHRC) Partners for uniting to fight a common cause affecting Women and Girls in the State.

She noted that, these shows a great commitment from the Office of the First Lady Mrs. Helen Caleb Muftwang for partnered with the (NHRC) and other Civil Society Organization (CSO)s.


Mrs. Abe appreciated the First Lady for taking her time to flag off this occasion on the 25th of November at the Government House, she hope and wished this will lichen with so many fruitful partnership together with the office of the First Lady.

Reading from the text of the National Executive Secretary of the Human Rights Commission, the State Co-ordinator Mrs. Veronica Abe, said "the National Human Rights Commission stand resolute commitment to address critical issues affecting the rights of Women and Girls".


In her (goodwill messages;) S. A to Governor on Gender Barr. Mrs. Olivia Dazyam, thank God for the opportunity given to them to come out and demonstrate to the World, their readiness in the State under the leadership of the wife of the Governor Mrs. Helen Muftwang.

Barr. Mrs. Olivia appreciating all that has gone into the preparation; the activist support and co-operation and partnership of the (NHRC), she thanked the Governor of the State Barr. Caleb Muftwang, for giving his approval for the commencement of the Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission in the State.


The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Izam Awere, represented by Akila Kasham assured all bodies statutorily established to protect the Human Rights, saying that, the (NBA) is in solidarity with them.

According to him, the NBA is at all time ready to work in senagy with the National Human Rights Commission, to protect the rights of the women and champion the cause of women.

The Chairperson International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Plateau State Branch Mrs. Obioma Ngozi Achilefu, noted that most women were dying in silence in their homes due to the previlence of gender-based violence that inflicts pains and agony on them.

Others goodwill messages; came from the Chairperson of the Nigerian Union of Journalists Plateau State Branch Mrs Ayuku Pwaspo, the State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Mrs. Jennifer Yarima, Women for Women International Zainab and (NOA).

The Permanent Secretary Ministry for Women Affairs Mr. James earlier said, the government has invested with time and resources to end violence against Human and Children, adding that, here on the Plateau, the ministry are synergizing with (NHRC) to say no to violence against women and children".

On her part, the wife of the Governor of the State Mrs. Helen Caleb Muftwang, was so excited to be part of this project, the annual marking of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

Mrs. Helen Caleb was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development Hon. Caroline Panglang Dafur, expressed her total commitment to eradicate violence against Women and Girls in Plateau State.

She added that, violence against Women and Girls is a grave violation of their fundamental human right, "in Plateau State, we acknowledging the urgency of taking action and protecting the rights and well-being of our Women and Girls".

"As the Commissioner for Women Affairs, I am fully committed to ensuring the active implementation of the Violence Against Person Prohibition law (VAPP) to safeguard Women and Girls from violence".

This Act provides a comprehensive legal framework for the prevention and management of violence against persons, including Women and Girls, she emphasize that the (VAPP) act is already enforced in Plateau State.

"By this, we are sending a clear message that violence against Women and Girls will not be tolerated in Plateau State".
