PLASIEC Sets Date for 2026 Local Government Elections in Plateau State

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced that it will conduct the 2026 local government elections in the state without any gaps. This development underscores the commission's commitment to upholding electoral laws and promoting democratic stability in Plateau State.

According to the commission's chairman, Plangji Daniel Cishak, the elections will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. This date was fixed in accordance with Section 19(2) of the PLASIEC Law 2024, which requires that elections be held no later than 30 days before the expiration of the tenure of the current office holders.

PLASIEC has also released a detailed timetable and schedule of activities for the elections, which includes the following key dates:

Publication of Notice of Election and release of Timetable: September 4, 2025
Conduct of Party Primaries: January 12-30, 2026
Collection of Nomination Forms: February 9-March 2, 2026
Screening of candidates: March 11-16, 2026
Publication of list of cleared candidates: March 19, 2026

Commencement of campaigns: March 31, 2026
Election Day: September 1, 2026

The commission has emphasized the importance of collaboration with stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and journalists, to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process. The success of the elections, PLASIEC notes, depends on the collective efforts of all stakeholders.
