Open Letter: IPA Pleads The Case Of Plateau For President To Appoint and Restore Ministerial Slot

By: Labaran Ahmed

The Chief Executive Officer's of the News on the Plateau, under the aegis of Independent Publishers Association (IPA), appealed to Mr President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appoint credible Son or Daughter of the State to fill the vacant position of former minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Kako Lalong.

An open letter to Mr President by the Chairman, Independent Publishers Association, Mr Shabul Mazadu, solicits for the appointment of a minister from Plateau State.

In view of the imperativeness, necessity and constitutionality of the representation of  all states in the Federal Executive Council,  FEC, in ministerial capacity, we beseech you to consider the absence of Plateau State from FEC for quite a long time by virtue of non-appointment of a minister since the resignation of the former, Simon Bako Lalong, in December 2023 and do the needful by reappointing one.

Your Excellency, your procrastination on this matter is denying Plateau State the right to proffering solutions to the nation's pressing challenges at FEC, contributing to the nation's development in ministerial position and inadequately informing the state about your planned policies and programmes as  discussed at FEC.

Plateau cannot afford relaying on media alone for information on decisions taken at FEC because of their skeletal information dissemination and exposé. The state needs to vividly know through its representative, who also will be a very good and closest link between the presidency and the state as other ministers are  to theirs.

Your Excellency, we are feeling belittled, neglected and rejected by this singular act of prolonged non-appointment of the constitutional Minister from our dear state. This saga has led to the speculation of sabotage by intra-party wranglings of the Plateau State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, where stakeholders and juggernauts are said to be speaking and agitating at variance for the ministerial position. If this is so, nobody in the state has the capacity to hold you to ransom and soil your name amongst peace loving citizens of Plateau over their aggrandizement.

Plateau is not a stranger to you. You have known it since the advent of the Third Republic when you were in the Social Democratic Party, SDP, where you came for the presidential primary in Jos, the state capital and Chief M.K.O. Abiola won the ticket in 1992.

Your campaign on the Plateau yielded positive results with SDP winning both the governorship and presidential elections in 1992 and 1993 respectively.

Your Excellency, you presence was and is still  actively felt in Plateau since the advent of the Fourth Republic to this very day via the odyssey of your political party sojourn from Alliance for Democracy, to Action Congress of Democrats, Action Congress, Action Congress of Nigeria and the All Progressives Congress.  This adventure has exposed you to knowing capacitated and incapacitated personalities from the state of whom you can appoint one as minister. Hence there is no need for procrastination in search for credibility or pleasing party faithful.

We appeal to you to bypass all intra-party tussles and use your exalted position and appoint a minister irrespective of party consideration as you did in the case of Rivers State.

Your Excellency, kindly consider our plea and swiftly appoint a minister to represent us at the Federal Executive Council.
