PLATEAU STATE COMMISSIONER FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION WAS KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION 2025
The "International Day of Education" celebrated worldwide on the 24th of January was for the first time hosted in Plateau State on the 25/01/2025.
The Chairman of the Central planning committee-Mr Umar Muhammad Sani who also doubles as the Senior Special Assistant on Media to His Excellency Governor Caleb Mutfwang together with members of his team coordinated the maiden edition of the event which was hosted at the Hikmah International School, Jos.
The Plateau State Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof. Goselle Obed Nanjul was the keynote speaker at the event.
The event was graced by a lot of dignitaries that included the Plateau State Commissioner for Education (secondary)- Mr Mohammad Nyalun; the first lady of Jos North LGA- Mrs JK Chris; Hon. Hassan Baba, the Councilor representing the good people of Gangagare ward of Jos North LGA; Hon Ubale- the Councilor representing the good people of Naraguta A ward among others. This year's theme is entitled: "AI & Education: Opportunities and Challenges"
Welcoming the congregants to the event, the Coordinator of the program - Mr Victor Meshak thanked the dignitaries for creating time out of their busy schedules to grace the occasion. He mentioned that the vision of the planning committee included: envisioning a vibrant, educative and entertaining commemoration that not only celebrates the importance of education but also engages women and youths in meaningful discourse.
He informed the gathering that they were also able to organize an essay writing competition and a debate involving selected schools where students had the opportunity to express their thoughts, showcase their talents and learn from one another in a spirited environment.
In his keynote lecture, Professor Goselle Obed Nanjul stated that actionable and practical steps were already put in place by the administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to ensure that the Gen-Z generation gleaned immensely from the 4th Industrial Revolution.
The Commissioner explained that the advent of Artificial Intelligence is expected to create an avenue where farmers are able to predict harvest with incredible accuracy, Medical doctors are able to diagnose diseases with unprecedented speed, and entrepreneurs are able to access personalized financial advice at fingertips. That these actions are not fictions but achievable steps within a grasp.
He emphasized that in these unfolding scenarios, Nigeria is not expected to be spectator or participant but to be a leader in order to bridge the gap between potentials and realities. The Commissioner seized the opportunity to further inform the gathering that strategic collaboration have already been taken between the Plateau State ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and her foreign partners to train up to 20,000 citizens of Plateau State on AI.
Many goodwill messages were received from the personalities present at the event. They all encouraged the students to strive to improve on their education and knowledge of AI to avoid getting left behind.They all expressed their appreciation to the organizers and hope that the vision created is sustained for a long time.
Highlights of the event was the presentation of awards to the winners of the essay competition.
The participation of the Plateau State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation at this year's event underscores the quest of the ministry to be at the forefront of advocacy for the adoption of AI by citizens of Plateau State and indeed Nigeria.
