PLATEAU STATE COMMISSIONER FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND INNOVATION INAUGURATED AS MEMBER OF PATHWAYS TO FOOD SYSTEMS TRANSFORMATION STEERING COMMITTEE, PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA
In a bold step towards securing food security and sustainability in Plateau State, the Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Prof (Assoc) Goselle Obed Nanjul was inaugurated as a member of the Pathways to Food Systems Transformation Steering Committee.
The event, held in Jos on January, 22 and 23, 2025, brought together key Commissioners and Government officials from sectors such as Agriculture & Rural development; Environment, Mining & Climate change; Commerce & Industries; Health and Budget & Economic Planning to address critical challenges facing food systems in the state.
The committee’s primary mandate is to explore and implement innovative strategies to transform Plateau State's food systems, by ensuring they proffer solutions to challenges posed by hunger, malnutrition, unemployment and the vulnerabilities compounded by changing weather patterns. In addition, they are expected to deploy Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant & Time -bound (SMART) approach to improving farming practices, enhance productivity and build a more resilient food system. It is also expected that the committee guides, monitors and drives the implementation of policies and programs that could lead to sustainable food systems in Plateau State.
During the inauguration, the Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation in a goodwill message extol the virtues of Science and Technology to creating a resilient Agricultural systems and securing a sustainable food future in Plateau State. He re-echoed Governor Caleb Mutfwang's dedication to enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability through modern technological solutions. He remarked:
"Plateau State is blessed with immense agricultural potential and has good weather and soil that could grow any crop. It is therefore imperative that through the Pathways to Food Systems Transformation Steering Committee, the state could aim to integrate modern science with traditional practices to enhance food production, reduce waste, encourage modern preservation systems and create sustainable livelihoods for our people."
Governor Caleb Mutfwang represented by the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning also commended the initiative, highlighting its alignment with the state's strategic development agenda. He stressed the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders to make Plateau State a model for sustainable agriculture and food production in Nigeria.
"This initiative reflects our administration’s commitment to empowering farmers, improving food systems, and ensuring food security for all Plateau citizens," he said.
The steering committee is expected to drive policies and actions that will revolutionize food production, storage, and distribution across Plateau State.
This initiative is intended to position Plateau State as a leader in leveraging science and technology to solve critical agricultural and food security challenges, ensuring economic growth and a brighter future for its citizens.
The Pathways to Food Systems Transformation Steering Committee is a beacon of hope for farmers, businesses, and residents across Plateau State, as it aims to harness the state’s agricultural heritage for sustainable development.
