Prof. Goselle Nanjul Accompanies DG- on Familiarization Tour of NILEST Centers in Plateau
Plateau State Commissioner for Science, Technology & Innovation, Prof. Goselle Nanjul accompanied the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather & Science Technology (NILEST) on a familiarization tour of NILEST Centers in Plateau State, Nigeria.
The year 2025 is beginning on a good note for the Plateau State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation in her quest to satiate her appetite for excellence to deliver on key mandate of the ministry, create newer frontiers and initiate impactful projects that will better the lots of the citizenry of Plateau State, Nigeria. In a milestone development , the Plateau State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Goselle Obed Nanjul welcomed to Jos the newly appointed Director General of NILEST - Dr Auwal Mustapha Imam who was on familiarization tour of the three centers in Plateau from the 11-12/01/2025. NILEST is an agency under the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology with its headquarter in Samaru- Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria The three centers in Plateau State are located in Wase, Langtang north & Jos south. The DG- Dr Auwal was accompanied to Plateau State by the Management staff of the Agency.
In his welcoming address, the Manager, Raw Hides and Skin improvement center Jos, Dr. Bulus Habila welcomed the DG- and his entourage and in particular thanked the Honourable Commissioner, Prof. Goselle Obed Nanjul for creating time on a Sunday to join in welcoming the DG. Dr. Bulus Habila chronicled the evolution of the center and listed some of its activities to include: collaboration with the Plateau State government which he hopes will take the advantage of the center to train future entrepreneurs, and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) which he also hopes will key into the Scale Up Artisans (SUPA) on leather and leather products, & the quest to purchase a parcel of land near the center to accommodate future endeavors. Dr Bulus enumerated some of the challenges confronting the Jos center to include: ill-equipped research laboratory; ill-equipped & obsolete tannery machines and the structure harbouring the machines; foundational cracks of the Administrative block! lack of basic utilities like light and water; the non payment of 2022 January salary to staff of the center; insufficient overhead to cater for the daily activities of the center, etc.
In his response, the DG- NILEST, Dr. Auwal intimidated the staff that he is on a familiarization tour to the three centers in Plateau State and has noted all the genuine concerns of the Jos center. He further stated that in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his mandate is to ensure that skills acquisition becomes a pivotal point of his administration as the DG- NILEST. To the excitement of the Staff of Jos center, Dr Auwal immediately approved the increase in the overhead of the center, approved the use of the multipurpose hall for hosting of events, requested to be furnished with estimates of the parcel of land near the center and promised to immediately see to it that basic utilities are put in place to ensure full activities are enjoyed by staff and citizens of Plateau State. Dr. Auwal was optimistic that his forthcoming courtesy visit to His Excellency, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang will avail him the opportunity to make groundbreaking pronouncements to the people of Plateau State. This pragmatic approach by the DG- NILEST- Dr Auwal is a testament to the capacity of a leader who came with a right frame of mind to reposition the agency.
On his part, Prof. Goselle Obed Nanjul welcomed the DG- NILEST to Plateau State and expounded on the great supports & efforts by His Excellency Barrister Caleb Mutfwang to see that Plateau State is at the forefront of innovative technological advancement in skills acquisition in Nigeria. The Commissioner enumerated some of the strides to include: firstly, the partnership with an international organization to upgrade the Jos Abattoir to an international standard to enable Plateau State queue into the Halal market; secondly, the intention to form the Plateau State ministry of Livestock and Blue Economy; thirdly, the domestication of the Start up bill in Plateau State etc. The Commissioner further informed the visitor that under governor Caleb Mutfwang that Human capital development and skills acquisition are of utmost priorities, and that the intention of the governor is to restore the old glory of the Naraguta leather works and make Plateau state truly the "Home of Peace and Tourism" through the promotion of quality indigenous products.*He seized the opportunity to further inform the DG- NILEST that steps have already been taken to ensure that Plateau State youths get first hand training from the Jos center in the areas of Leather manufacturing, Footwear manufacturing, Leather goods, & Hides and skin improvement. The Commissioner strongly believes that the training will avail the would-be participants to gain mentorship, certification, form clusters, linkages and build a source of livelihood.
The link up between the Commissioner and the DG- NILEST underscores the state's dedication to fostering a culture of innovation and nurturing local talents. The link up is expected to set a new benchmark for technological skills acquisition progress in Plateau State, paving the way for a brighter and more innovative entrepreneurial future.
