LAOSA National President Commends Set ’90 for Milestone JAMB Sponsorship Initiative

The National President of the Langtang Old Students Association of Nigeria (LAOSA), Mr. Ponyak Nandang, who also serves as Controller of the Nigeria Correctional Center, Niger State, has commended the 1990 set for sponsoring the 2026 JAMB registration of 30 outstanding students.
He described the gesture as a milestone achievement in the association’s history, noting that the intervention would help alleviate the financial burden on parents while promoting academic excellence.

Speaking in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Jos, Nandang praised the initiative as a significant step toward uplifting humanity and strengthening the legacy of LAOSA.
According to him, this is the first time a graduating set has undertaken a project with such direct impact on students’ academic advancement.
“This initiative will not only transform the lives of the beneficiaries but also inspire other students to strive for excellence. It is a challenge to other sets to introduce programmes that promote healthy competition and revive academic standards in the school,” he said.

He further appealed to Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang to support the school with essential learning materials and infrastructure upgrades, describing it as one of the oldest educational institutions in Plateau State.

Nandang emphasized that the LAOSA national body remains committed to working closely with all sets to adopt policies and programmes that will reposition the school for greater excellence.

Chairman of the 1990 set, Comrade Shamdung Jepla Ayuba, disclosed that no fewer than 30 students of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Langtang (formerly Government Secondary School, Langtang), benefited from the JAMB registration sponsorship.

He explained that beneficiaries were selected based on their academic track records and would be further supported if they meet the required JAMB cut-off marks.

Ayuba, who led a delegation including Dr. Nanfa Nimvyap and Mr. Yakubu Ventim Wuyep on an assessment visit to the school, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating state of infrastructure.

He lamented the dilapidated structures, shortage of teachers, vandalised dining hall, lack of desks and chairs, and the overgrown environment within the school premises.

“Almost 35 years after our graduation, it is painful to see the school deteriorate to this level,” he said.

He also raised concerns about the low enrollment of female students, revealing that out of over 400 students, only 13 currently occupy the renovated female hostel.

The delegation further observed that food supplies from the government often arrive late, forcing the school management to borrow funds to feed boarding students.

Ayuba called on the Ministry of Education to renovate hostels, deploy more qualified teachers—especially in science, social sciences, and arts—and restore the school’s declining standards.

The Principal of the school, Mr. Nandap Gambo, a member of the 1984 set, acknowledged the numerous challenges facing the institution.

He noted the urgent need for more teachers, improved learning facilities, electricity supply for night studies, and rehabilitation of the vandalised dining hall.

According to him, inadequate teaching staff and learning materials have significantly affected students’ performance, particularly in external examinations.

Vice Principal (Academics), Mr. Timloh Kumyil, also appealed for government intervention in providing textbooks, ICT facilities, science laboratory equipment, and hostel accommodation.

In appreciation, the Head Boy—one of the beneficiaries—thanked Set ’90 for their generosity and pledged to justify the opportunity through hard work and academic excellence.

“Today is one of the happiest days in our academic journey. We are grateful that our seniors remembered us,” he said.

Established in 1971 as a community secondary school, Government Secondary School, Langtang was founded to produce sound leaders. The first principal was Mr. Binfa M. Mwanjul, before the creation of Benue/Plateau State in 1976.

The school has produced 23 principals over the years but has experienced a gradual decline in student enrollment and infrastructure development in recent times.
