In a landmark achievement, Hon. Daniel Asama Ago, the member representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, has successfully pushed four constitutional amendment bills past the second reading.
In a statement signed by his Media Director, Brian Lang, it was announced that the bills initiated by Hon. Daniel Asama Ago, seeking amendment of the constitution, are: Defining, Criminalizing Torture and Inhuman Treatment, Strengthening Human Rights Treaty, Free, Compulsory, and Universal Basic Education as a Fundamental Right, and Citizenship Rights and Inclusion of Youths & Women in Leadership.
These bills, which are now at the committee stage for scrutiny, demonstrate Hon. Asama's commitment to promoting human rights, education, and gender equality in Nigeria.
The Four Bills: 1: Defining, Criminalizing Torture and Inhuman Treatment: This bill aims to strengthen Nigeria's human rights framework by providing a clear definition of torture and inhuman treatment, establishing penalties for perpetrators, and ensuring victims receive adequate compensation and rehabilitation.
Bill 2: Strengthening Human Rights Treaty: This bill seeks to ensure that human rights treaties ratified by Nigeria are properly integrated into domestic law, providing a framework for their effective application in governance and judicial matters.
Bill 3: Free, Compulsory, and Universal Basic Education as a Fundamental Right: Co-sponsored with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, this bill aims to enshrine free and compulsory basic education as a fundamental human right, ensuring every Nigerian child has access to quality education without financial barriers.
Bill 4: Citizenship Rights and Inclusion of Youths & Women in Leadership: Co-sponsored with Hon. Kafilat Ogbara, this bill addresses long-standing gender inequalities in Nigerian citizenship laws, ensuring foreign spouses of Nigerian women receive the same citizenship rights as those married to Nigerian men and mandating increased inclusion of women and youths in leadership positions.
These bills have the potential to positively impact the lives of Nigerians, particularly vulnerable groups such as women, children, and marginalized communities. As they progress through the legislative process, it is essential to ensure they are thoroughly scrutinized and debated to ensure their effectiveness and benefits to Nigerian society.
