Mutfwang's 60th Birthday: Info. Com. Clarifies Artisan Mining Suspension

By: Labaran Ahmed

The Plateau State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon Mrs Joyce Ramnap, clarified that the Plateau State Government didn't ban artisan mining, but rather temporarily suspended it for security and human exploration reasons.

She made a statement during an interview with Global News at Governor Caleb Mutfwang's 60th birthday celebration, which was held at the Victoria Gowon Hall, New Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos.

The Plateis State government has indeed clarified that it hasn't banned artisan mining in the state, despite rumors surrounding Executive Order 001. According to Rt. Hon Mrs Joyce Ramnap, the government has temporarily suspended artisan mining activities to regulate the sector and address illegal mining practices.

According to the Information Commissioner, it's essential for the people to know what's happening, and the government wants to ensure that mining activities are conducted in a responsible and sustainable manner.

The spokesperson for the state explained that before the suspension, there were significant challenges associated with illegal mining activities, including environmental degradation, security threats, and economic losses.

Rt. Hon Mrs Ramnap emphasized that mining activities are not inherently bad for the state or its citizens. In fact, mining serves as a vital source of revenue for the state and has showcased Plateau State in a positive light on the global stage.

The Information Commissioner explained that there are several issues the government needs to clarify regarding mining activities in Plateau State. Among these issues are insecurity challenges that have arisen due to the proliferation of mining activities in the state. Additionally, the government is concerned about child molestation and other safety risks associated with illegal mining exploration.

Mining ponds have become death traps, locally known as "LOTO," where people, including children, are trapped and die. The Commissioner lamented that people are dying in these mining ponds. To address these concerns, the government has temporarily banned illegal mining activities through Executive Order 001.

This temporary ban aims to regulate mining activities, ensure the safety of citizens, and address environmental concerns. The government seeks to create a platform where artisanal miners have a voice and ensure that mining activities are conducted responsibly and sustainably.

According to the Commissioner, those are some of the issues that the government needs to be looking at, particularly in relation to mining activities in Plateau State.

She further emphasized that the government needs to examine issues such as the welfare of miners, agreements with illegal miners, and ensuring that miners have a platform to express their concerns. At the end of this process, the state government will collaborate with the federal government to implement a more effective framework for mining activities in Plateau State.

These are some of the reasons for Government Executive Order (001).
